Today, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors adjourned our meeting in memory of Chairman Bo Mazzetti — a giant in tribal leadership, a devoted public servant, and a man whose legacy will forever shape California and its tribal nations.
It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Chairman Mazzetti passed away on May 1, 2025, at the age of 77, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and their children, Emily and Joseph.
A proud Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War, Bo returned home to earn a degree in Behavioral Science from Cal Poly — laying the foundation for a lifetime of leadership and service. Bo’s accomplishments were many, but it was his unwavering dedication to his people that defined his every step.
Over the years, he helped establish and lead organizations that improved lives and built opportunity for Native communities — including the Southern California Tribal Chairman’s Association, the Reservation Transportation Authority, and most recently, the San Luis Rey Indian Water Authority. Through decades of perseverance, Bo played a key role in securing long-denied water rights for tribes after a 50-year legal battle.
Bo was elected to the Rincon Tribal Council in 2002 and became Chairman in 2008. For 16 years, he led with vision and strength, always focused on uplifting his community and defending tribal sovereignty. Under his leadership, the Rincon Tribe flourished — growing stronger, more self-sufficient, and more united.
But Chairman Mazzetti’s legacy is more than titles or achievements.
He was a leader with heart. A fighter with humility. A man of deep faith, boundless energy, and a voice that carried wisdom wherever he went. He made everyone feel seen. He listened. He believed in the power of partnerships and the importance of honoring the past while building a better future.
Chairman Bo Mazzetti transformed the world around him — and the ripple effects of his leadership will be felt for generations to come.
We honor his memory today not just with words, but with a renewed commitment to carry forward his values: courage, compassion, service, and community.
Rest in peace, Chairman Mazzetti. Thank you for everything you gave. Your spirit lives on in the people and the progress you inspired.
