"Super" Sanctuary County

I am disappointed to share the outcome of today’s vote by the Board of Supervisors. In a 3-1 decision, San Diego County has been designated as a “Super” Sanctuary County—a policy that is both reckless and dangerous.

This move is an insult to every law-abiding citizen who values safety and justice and a betrayal of the people we are sworn to protect.

Here's what I had to say during the meeting:

Supervisor Jim Desmond's Video - Dec 10, 2024

This policy goes far beyond California’s already extreme Sanctuary State laws, actively shielding illegal immigrant criminals from deportation. Under this measure, law enforcement is prohibited from notifying ICE about individuals who have committed violent and heinous crimes, including:

  • Rape and stalking
  • Assault and battery
  • DUI
  • Burglary
  • Child abuse

To be clear, this means that individuals who have committed these appalling crimes will be allowed to walk free in our communities, protected by County policies, without any coordination with ICE.

This decision places the interests of illegal immigrant criminals above the safety of American citizens. It sends a chilling message to law-abiding residents: your safety matters less than political posturing.

The real victims of this decision are the mothers, fathers, children, and families who may be harmed by the individuals this policy protects. This decision doesn’t just ignore public safety—it actively undermines it.

I will not stand idly by while our communities are made less safe.

I have already reached out to the incoming Administration and will fight relentlessly to reverse this disastrous policy. I will do everything in my power to ensure that dangerous criminals are removed from our neighborhoods and that San Diegans have leaders who put their safety first—not last.

Your voice and your safety matter, and I am committed to fighting for you every step of the way.
