A Special Election for District 1

A Special Election for District 1

Yesterday, I made the motion—which was unanimously approved—to hold a special election for the District 1 Supervisor seat, formerly held by Supervisor Nora Vargas.

This decision reflects a core principle I firmly believe in: the people deserve the opportunity to elect their representative through a transparent and democratic process, not a political appointment.

We faced this decision once before. When Nathan Fletcher left office, we made the right choice and trusted the people to decide. Now, with Supervisor Vargas stepping down, I’m proud we’ve chosen to uphold that same standard once again.

I understand that a special election comes with a cost. When District 4 faced a vacancy, the election expense was $5 million, and this one will likely be similar. But the cost of democracy is invaluable. Ensuring that the residents of District 1 have a voice in their representation is worth every penny.

Elections are the cornerstone of our democracy.

Thank you for continuing to stand with me as we work to preserve these values and build a stronger future for our region.
