Eric Weirather: Inspirational Leader Award --- Our inspirational Leader Award is presented to Eric Weirather, the Band Director for Rancho Buena Vista High School. Eric has been leading the band for 22 years and teaching music in public schools for 28 years. In 2024, he received the prestigious Vista Unified School District Golden Apple Award. His unwavering commitment to music education continues to inspire generations.
Joe Roy: Getting Stuff Done Award --- Joe Roy, a Police Officer for the Oceanside Police Department and Vice President on the Oceanside Police Officers' Association Board, exemplifies dedication. A Marine Corps reservist, leadership speaker, coach, tactical instructor, and Super Dad, Joe has repeatedly gone above and beyond to assist District 5 constituents in crisis. We honor his relentless commitment to getting things done.
Jasmine Hernandez: Extraordinary Youth Award--- Jasmine Hernandez, a beacon of resilience and achievement, receives our Extraordinary Youth Award. With a 4.0 GPA and nearly 700 hours of community service, Jasmine has overcome two major heart surgeries and continues to excel in academics and sports. Her spirit and dedication make her a truly extraordinary youth.
Jessica & David Waite: Resiliency Award--- Jessica and David Waite, owners of the Brine Box, faced the loss of their restaurant in the Oceanside Pier Fire. Despite this, they continue to lead resiliently, promoting sustainable restaurant practices and zero waste. Their strength and perseverance earn them our Resiliency Award.
Donnie Dee: Uplifting the Community Award--- Donnie Dee from the San Diego Rescue Mission is recognized for his exceptional leadership in addressing homelessness. Donnie's efforts have significantly improved the state of homelessness in San Diego, making him deserving of the Uplifting the Community Award.
Oceanside High School Choir Group: National Superstar Award --- The Oceanside High School Soundwaves Show Choir, led by Director Leah Ritt, has built a stellar reputation over 20 years. Their recent victory in the "Competition of Choirs" in Boston, where they swept their division and were voted "Best Traveler Team of 2023," earns them our National Superstar Award.
REINS Horsemanship Therapeutic: Community Service Award--- REINS Horsemanship Therapeutic provides vital support for the physical, mental, and emotional health of disabled children and adults through equine-assisted activities. Their impactful work in our community is recognized with the Community Service Award.
Mr. Chris Geldert: Impact Service Award --- Chris Geldert, leader of the Building and Construction pathway at San Marcos High School, has significantly impacted students' lives. His recognition as the College & Career Pathways Educator of the Year by the Classroom of the Future Foundation underscores his dedication. Chris receives our Impact Service Award for his contributions to student success.
Carly Starr: The Real News Award--- Carly Starr, Executive Director of KOCT, Oceanside's premiere community television service, is honored with The Real News Award. KOCT has provided public, educational, and government access programming for over 35 years, ensuring our community stays informed with real news.
Lori Body (VANC): Semper Fi Award --- Lori Body and the Veterans Association of North County (VANC) offer essential support to active military personnel, veterans, and their families. VANC's year-round services make it a cornerstone of our community, earning Lori the Semper Fi Award.
Elanor Evans: Community Advocate Award --- Elanor Evans, a long-time educator and advocate, has promoted North County achievements, social well-being, and student success. Her tireless efforts and dedication to our community earn her the Community Advocate Award.
Chief Dave Parsons: Call to Action Award--- Oceanside Fire Chief Dave Parsons is honored with the Call to Action Award for his leadership during the Oceanside Pier Fire. His swift and effective response prevented a greater disaster, showcasing his dedication to our safety.
Love Esco (George Weir): Spreading Love Award --- Love Esco serves our community through various projects, from park clean-ups to supporting local businesses. Their extensive efforts to spread love and support throughout North County earn them the Spreading Love Award.
David Ross: Newsmaker of the Year--- David Ross, editor of the Valley Roadrunner for 40 years and the Escondido Times Advocate for ten years, has authored over 60,000 articles. His commitment to truthful reporting and community service makes him our Newsmaker of the Year.
Elmer Royce Williams: Impossible Fight Award--- Elmer Royce Williams, a US Navy veteran, demonstrated unmatched heroism during a historic dogfight in 1952. His 35-minute battle against seven MiG-15s remains legendary. We honor him with the Impossible Fight Award for his incredible courage and service.
