Honoring the Foundation for Senior Care During National Family Caregivers Month

Today, the County of San Diego had the privilege of recognizing Executive Director Perla Hurtado and the exceptional team at the Foundation for Senior Care in Fallbrook.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor the individuals who quietly keep our communities strong. Across San Diego County, countless residents balance careers, families, and the daily responsibilities of caring for aging parents, spouses, or loved ones with complex medical needs. These caregivers form the backbone of our social support system, often preventing costly institutional care by providing essential help at home.

According to AARP, more than 48 million Americans provide unpaid care each year, spending thousands of their own dollars to support those they love. That reality underscores why the Foundation for Senior Care’s work is so vital.

Founded in 1979, the Foundation has grown from a small volunteer effort into a trusted nonprofit serving seniors and caregivers in Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow, and De Luz. Each year, the organization delivers:

  • 5,500+ rides

  • 10,000 support interactions

  • 2,500 days of care

  • Services to more than 1,200 seniors

Their programs include transportation, advocacy, technology assistance, recovery support, education, companionship, and an Adult Day Center that provides safe, compassionate care for individuals living with memory loss or dementia. Their work ensures older adults can remain safe, connected, and supported close to home.

In April, the County’s Health and Human Services Agency honored the Foundation with the Director’s Public Health Champion Award—a well-deserved recognition of their impact.

The County of San Diego is committed to recognizing organizations that exemplify service, compassion, and community leadership. The Foundation for Senior Care is a shining example of that commitment.
