Stop the Massive New Transfer Tax

A little-known proposal at the County could add $50,000–$60,000 to the cost of selling a home — unless San Diegans speak up now.

County leaders are advancing multiple new taxes at the same time, all designed to extract more money from San Diego families — without open debate or a vote from the public.

The Biggest Threat: A Massive New Home Sale Tax

County officials are working to dramatically increase the property transfer tax — the tax you pay when you sell your home.

Right now, that tax is capped at 55 cents per $500 of a home’s value.

They want to raise that cap to $30.55 per $500.

Here’s what that means in real dollars:

  • An $800,000 home would go from under $1,000 in tax to nearly $50,000

  • A $1 million home would face a tax of more than $60,000

  • Higher-value homes would be hit even harder

That’s tens of thousands of dollars added overnight — just to sell your own home.

They’ll claim this isn’t a “property tax” and call it a Documentary Transfer Tax. That’s wordplay. When you raise the cost of buying and selling homes, those costs get passed on to families, seniors, and renters.

At a time when housing is already unaffordable, this proposal would:

  • Push home prices even higher

  • Make it harder for first-time buyers

  • Punish seniors trying to downsize

  • Drive rents up across San Diego County

Instead of being transparent with voters, County leadership wants to hire a lobbying firm to pressure Sacramento to change state law so this tax hike becomes possible.

It Doesn’t Stop There

At the same time, they are laying the groundwork for an entirely new tax: a local payroll tax.

A payroll tax hits every paycheck — workers, employers, or both.

That means:

  • Higher costs for small businesses

  • Fewer jobs or lower wages

  • Employers thinking twice about staying or expanding in San Diego

And all of this is happening at once:

  • A push for a sales tax

  • A push for a home sale (transfer) tax

  • And now a potential payroll tax

Sales taxes. Property taxes. Payroll taxes.

Not debated openly.
Not voted on yet.
But quietly advanced behind the scenes.

San Diegans are already stretched thin. Housing, groceries, gas, utilities, and insurance costs keep rising.

The answer is not more taxes.

The answer is fiscal discipline, accountability, and respect for the people who are already paying the bills.
